Hedgehog Information Handout
The hedgehog originates from both Europe and Africa and has in recent years gained popularity as a household pet. They are diurnal (active at dawn and dusk) creatures that spend much of their daytime hours sleeping. Hedgehogs have short spines that cover the back and crown of their head, although they are not barbed and do not cause serious injury to handlers. Coarse, dense fur covers the rest of the body. Their average life span is 5-8 years, with their weight between 250-600 grams. Diet Suggestions The African hedgehogs are insectivorous mammals that are very prone to obesity in captivity. Commercial hedgehog diets or dry cat kibble (Adult) should make up the bulk of the diet. In animals showing a tendency towards obesity, light or low-fat cat food should be fed. They should also be supplemented daily with chopped vegetables as well as crickets, earthworms, or meal worms. Dried fruit, hard-boiled eggs, cottage cheese, or other snacks low in fat and sugar can be used as an occasional treat. Because of their nocturnal natures and foraging capabilities these animals should be fed in the evening hours. Fresh water in a shallow ceramic dish or water bottle should be available at all times. Handling/Behavior Many hedgehogs can be tamed and handled without injury to the owner or pet if approached with care and patience. Start by looking and listening to the animal. Chirping, whistling and purring usually means that the hedgehog feels safe and content. A snorting, hissing or clicking animal is frightened or aggravated. Hedgehogs use body language to communicate their emotions. They will often curl into a ball and use their quills, or spines, to indicate their mood. Hedgehogs also startle easily. When they're frightened, hedgehogs will curl up into a ball with their quills erect. This helps protect the hedgehog’s face and soft, vulnerable belly. Most hedgehogs slowly uncurl after a few minutes. Another way hedgehogs show fear is by erecting their spines. Typically, the spines all over the body are erect when the hedgehog is scared. If only the spines on the head are erect, this usually means the hedgehog is cautious and uncertain. When the spines lie flat on the body, the hedgehog is calm and comfortable. Start with the hedgehog held flat in the palm of the hand and slowly allow it to explore and adjust. Your hedgehog may do a self-annointing activity called “anting.” This is a normal hedgehog activity performed when confronted by a new object or smell in his environment. The hedgehog will lick the new object repeatedly until saliva is produced and he begins drooling. Then he will groom his skin and spines with the frothy saliva. This behavior may go on for minutes or last up to an hour. Quilling - There are over 7,000 quills on a hedgehog. These quills are modified hairs and contain air chambers that make the quills light. Young hedgehogs will shed their baby quills starting at about 2 to 6 months of age. At this time, the behavior of the hedgehog may change. During quilling, the hedgehog may be rolled into a ball for long periods of time. They may hiss and may have a poor appetite. Usually, quilling takes about a month and the hedgehog will return to normal. It is acceptable to handle the hedgehog during quilling, just be careful and patient. ]]>

About All Creatures Animal Hospital

[gallery link="file" columns="2"]
Our practice is conveniently located in East Amherst at the intersection of Transit and Casey Road in Wolters Plaza, next to Wolters Bakery. We opened in April of 2003 to serve dogs, cats, birds, ferrets, rabbits, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, lizards, snakes, turtles, kangaroos, tigers, coatimundis and primates to name a few. New York City interior designer, Michael Deloach of Deloach Design & Decoration, designed the interiors. Electric colors made our waiting room a gallery: it features the photography of local photographer Laurie Joyce and is created to honor the bond between people and their pets. Our practice is 900 square feet and includes 4 examination rooms, an isolated surgery suite equipped with microsurgical equipment, electrocautery and rigid endoscope, Electrocardiogram (EKG) monitors, pulse oximetry and doppler equipment are available for anesthetic monitoring. We have a radiology suite, a fully equipped laboratory with state of the art blood analyzers and an in-house pharmacy. We offer state of the art imaging technology such as ultrasound studies, electrocardiograms and blood pressure monitoring. We have an intensive care oxygenated cage for critical patients, as well as regular cages to hospitalize our stable patients.

After receiving her BA in Biology from the University of Buffalo, Jennifer attended Ross University on the island of St. Kitts in the West Indies. She studied at Ross for twenty eight months before traveling to Cornell University to complete her clinical year. Jennifer’s experience in the animal care field extends back to her high school years. Her volunteering and internship history includes work at a wildlife rehabilitation center, a therapeutic riding center, an alpaca farm, a large animal ambulatory service, a small animal clinic, and the Buffalo Zoological gardens, among others. Kathleen Pitrola - Licensed Veterinary Technician

Kathleen has been employed with ACAH for a little over four years. You might see her speeding about the floor plan quickly unpacking boxes of hospital supplies in between appointments or intaking some of our Second Chance Rescue Cats for routine spay/neuter procedures. Kathleen attended the Veterinary Technology program at LaGuardia Community College and received most of her training in New York City working at the Humane Society of New York. Kathleen has also been an instructor and tutor for college courses including Intro to Veterinary Technology, Biological Chemistry and Veterinary Nursing. Kathleen's first experiences as a technician began with treating strays she and her family would stumble upon in their neighborhood on the west side of Buffalo. It was not uncommon to find a crow named Herby with a splint or a cat named Fluffy with a bandage. Eventually, these homeless creatures became family pets. Kathleen attended Buffalo State College in pursuit of a career in the arts. After graduating with a B.A. in Theatre, she moved to New York City and lived there until 2005, participating in many stage productions. Her family, with a yard for her dogs and more space for her cats, called her back to Buffalo and now Kathleen has found the means to stage her own production. It's a great feeling and privilege to be happy going to work each day at All Creatures. [caption id="attachment_190" align="alignright" width="288" caption="Anne Mangione - Licensed Veterinary Technician"]Anne Mangione - Licensed Veterinary Technician[/caption]

Anne Mangione - Licensed Veterinary Technician

Anne became an animal lover at the age of 12 when she got her first pets- hamsters named Ethyl & Lucy (who later became Fred after Ethyl had babies!). A few years later, she got her first cat, Sid, and she knew she would never be without a cat again. After earning her bachelor's degree in Fashion Technology from Buffalo State College, Anne quickly realized that fashion was not her true calling and after months of soul-searching, and watching a lot of animal planet, she realized she wanted to work with animals. She soon applied to Medaille College for the Veterinary Technology program, and graduated two years later. In 2007, she became a licensed veterinary technician and soon began her work at All Creatures Animal Hospital. In her spare time, Anne enjoys knitting, sewing, and spending time with Ruby, Holly, Olive ( her three cats) and Nico, her new dachshund puppy. [caption id="attachment_686" align="alignright" width="288" caption="Jennifer Danaher - Licensed Veterinary Technician"]Jennifer Danaher - Licensed Veterinary Technician[/caption]

A passionate feeling and a love for the incredible ability to care for animals is something this technician carries with her each day as she joins our team at All Creatures Animal Hospital. Jennifer attended Niagara County College and then later graduated from Medaille College in 1995. She brings many tales to tell throughout her 15 years experience within the veterinary world. She is delighted to be working with exotics and embraces her new found future at ACAH. She takes pride in being a mom of two and has a Shaded Persian Cat named Stanley. Outside of work, Jens’ hobbies include motorcycling on a perfect day, cooking, gardening and being involved in her kids’ sports interests. Amy Albert - Office Manager

Amy graduated from Medaille College in 1993 with an AS in Veterinary Technology. She worked as a Licensed Veterinary Technician upon graduation and was promoted to a supervisory technician role in 1995. She became the Office Manager at All Creatures Animal Hospital upon its opening in 2003. While maintaining her career as an LVT and Office Manager, she graduated from Daemen College in 2004 with a BS and MS in Health Sciences and Physician Assistant studies and worked as a Physician Assistant until she had a baby in 2008. She continues managing the hospital and filling in as a licensed veterinary technician when needed. She works with her husband, Dr. Albert, in helping care for primates. She has also volunteered at the Buffalo Zoo. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband, children and their German Shepherd and Boxer, Angel and Baxter. [caption id="attachment_187" align="alignright" width="288" caption=" Mary Nuhn - Veterinary Assistant"] Mary Nuhn - Veterinary Assistant[/caption]

Mary Nuhn - Veterinary Assistant

Mary’s unexpected journey into the Animal World began when she read an article about BrightStar German Shephard Rescue in the local Lockport newspaper called “The Union Sun and Journal.” She had no idea that involving herself with this group would open doors to many valuable experiences. Fostering many german shepherds’ through this rescue group inspired her to function as the Home Check Coordinator and Senior to Senior coordinator for BrightStar Rescue. Mary felt emotionally attached to two of her fosters and decided to make them permanent additions to her family Her only family dog at the time, Gracie would not be alone anymore. Max and Raven would be keeping her company all day long. Mary had been working as a vet receptionist at ACAH since June 2006 but eventually crossed over to becoming a vet assistant. Aside from her very important role at ACAH, her caretaking ability did not stop there as she is a proud mom to three boys (Zachary, Dylan and Adam), an Umbrella Cockatoo (Mackenzie) and wife to Howard. She is currently the president of the PTA at Washington Hunt in Lockport and holds an associates degree from ECC. [caption id="attachment_194" align="alignright" width="288" caption="Jenn Kishbaugh - Veterinary Receptionist"]Jenn Kishbaugh - Veterinary Receptionist[/caption]

Jenn Kishbaugh - Veterinary Receptionist

Jenn is one of our newest additions to the All Creatures Team. When she’s not greeting our clients with a smile and patting their pets on the head, as a veterinary receptionist, she is focused on her other life goals which include attending class at Buffalo State college and volunteering at the Aquarium of Niagara. She is currently studying Biology, Psychology and Animal Behavior and plans to continue her education by attending veterinary school in 2010. Her decision to become a veterinarian began as a young girl of 8 being the primary caregiver to a very needy hamster named Critter. Her love of animals did not stop there! It was the beginning of her passion for exotics. Presently, a ball python named Kreacher , two Mexican axolotls, birds, dogs, rabbits and fish keep her busy at home. Other hobbies include scuba diving, Bikram yoga and bike riding. [caption id="attachment_690" align="alignright" width="254" caption="Janeen Rak - Veterinary Receptionist"]Janeen Rak - Veterinary Receptionist[/caption]

Janeen Rak - Veterinary Receptionist

You never know what other interesting facts lay within a persons’ life when you first meet them. For example, our full-time receptionist Janeen greets you with a smile, as you walk through the front door of All Creatures but you would never know that she was once invited to fly down to Orlando, Florida to audition for a Disney Movie and Big Time Fancy Disney Show! Fortunate for us, she followed the road that lead her to All Creatures! Janeen began walking the “pet world” road, when she accepted her first position at Steve’s Wonderful World of Pets running the animal husbandry department. Feeding exotic baby birds and taking care of all the puppies inspired her to pursue a career in Zoology. She attended the Zoology Program at Niagara Community College and completed an internship at the Ridge Road Horse Stables. While working at Steves’, Janeen was also an assistant dog trainer at Eagle Ridge Kennels. Outside of work, Janeen is kept very busy caring for her Golden Retriever “Delila”. She loves fishing, boating and hiking! Next time you’re in, return that smile and ask Janeen about her experience singing with the Buffalo Philharmonic Choir!

Immunizations http://harvestsum.com/ac3/?page_id=21 Fri, 17 Apr 2009 20:48:13 +0000 http://harvestsum.com/ac2/?page_id=15 Immunizations Canine - Rabies, DHPP, Kennel Cough, Leptospirosis, Lyme Rabies - neurologic disease transmitted by bats, raccoons, skunks, other infected animals by saliva or bodily fluids. 100% FATAL. As required by New York State law, puppies must receive their first rabies vaccine by 12-16 weeks of age. This vaccine is good for 1 year, at which time they receive the 3 year vaccine. Distemper vaccine prevents the infectious diseases canine distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, and Type 2 Parainfluenza. Puppies receive 3-4 of these vax, with the last one being given at or after 16 weeks of age. At 1 year it is boostered, and then every 3 years after that. Kennel Cough - a highly contagious respiratory disease. This vaccine should be given to any dog who comes in contact with other dogs. As a puppy, it is given one time, and then boostered annually. Most boarding facilities, groomers, doggy daycares, puppy classes, and obedience training facilities require all 3 of these vaccines on order to bring your pet in. Leptospirosis - contagious disease that affects the kidneys and other internal organs. It is transmitted through rat urine. This vaccine should be given to any dog that lives in an area with known rodent problems. It is given as a puppy once and boostered 2 weeks later, and then boostered annually after that.
Feline - FVRCP, Rabies, Feline Leukemia Rabies - neurologic disease transmitted by bats, raccoons, skunks, other infected animals by saliva or bodily fluids. 100% FATAL. As required by New York State law, kittens must receive their first rabies vaccine by 12-16 weeks of age. This vaccine is boostered annually. Our hospital recommends the 1 year vaccine specially formulated for cats, and has a lower rate of the cancerous tumors, called fibrosarcoma, which have been associated with giving the 2 year dog/cat vaccine to cats. FVRCP - highly infectious respiratory illness. This vaccine protects against feline rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia, and Chlamydia. This vaccine should be given to all cats, especially those exposed to other cats and who go outside. This vaccine is given every 3-4 weeks as a kitten, with the last vaccine being given at or after 16 weeks of age. It is boostered at 1 year, and then given every 3 years after that. Feline Leukemia - disease contracted through contact with other leukemia positive cats, we recommend this vaccine be given to any cats who are tested negative for leukemia that live in a household with leukemia positive cats, and also cats who go outside. Please ask your veterinarian about the feline kennel cough vaccine, in order to decide if it should be given to your pet.
Ferrets - Rabies, Distemper Rabies - As required by New York State law, the rabies vaccine needs to be boostered annually. Distemper vaccine also needs to be boostered annually. As ferrets tend to have a high rate of vaccine reaction, we recommend not doing both vaccines on the same day. They are typically given 1-2 weeks apart. We may suggest giving a medication in the form of a shot to prevent a vaccine reaction.
Birds - Polyoma Polyoma - virus transmitted through contact with infected birds. Your bird should be vaccinated if they are in contact with any other birds. Not indicated for birds in a single bird household or through who have no risk of ever coming into contact with any other birds.
All recommendations concerning immunizations at our hospital follow the American Veterinary Medical Association recommendations.

Dental Services

At All Creatures Animal Hospital, we feel that dental health is a crucial part of your pet's total medical picture. Dental disease such as dental tartar and gingivitis if left untreated can shorten your pet's life span; chronic bacterial infection of the teeth and gums shower your pet's organs leading to organ damage and even heart disease. Good dental care is a proven key to maintaining overall quality of life and ensuring longevity of your pet. Ask your doctor about your pet's dental health and products you can use to keep his or her teeth healthier.
A note from our Staff...
On the morning of your pets’ scheduled dental procedure, one of our licensed veterinary technicians will go through your pets’ dental treatment plan. Any questions or concerns you may have involving the cleaning itself can be answered by one of the technicians or the veterinarian. Based on your pets age and current health status, a specific anesthesia protocol will be designed to accommodate your pets’ needs. You will be called at noon the same day and given an update as to how your pet is recovering. We can estimate a “go-home” time based on your availability during the day. When your pet is discharged, one of our technicians’ will be glad to answer any questions you may have and explain any medications that may be prescribed by the veterinarian. Your pet should not have anything to eat after midnight the night before and should arrive in the morning by 8 a.m. to be admitted for the dental procedure that day.

Sugar Gliders Information Handout
Sugar gliders are dexterous, agile, highly energetic members of the marsupial family. They have a furred web of skin (the gliding membrane) which runs on each side of the body from the wrist to the ankle referred to as the patagium. When in motion this gives them the appearance of a flying kite. These arboreal marsupials are native to Australia. Males average in weight between 115-160 grams with females being smaller at 95-135 grams. Average lifespan ranges between 8-13 years. They are primarily gray in color with black stripes and have a lighter underside. At sexual maturity males develop a scent gland on the top of their head used in marking females and their territory. Since they are nocturnal animals, they have large eyes for superior night vision. Sugar gliders are affectionate and very intelligent, and can make an excellent pet for the right family. Just like any other exotic species they have some very special needs. Diet Providing the proper nutrition is a very important aspect of keeping your glider happy and healthy. Fresh food should be offered daily at a maximum of 15-25% of the sugar glider's body weight. In the wild gliders feast on a combination of insects, pollen, nectar, and the sap from eucalyptus trees. In captivity, these animals need a variety of foods to meet their nutritional needs. Approximately 40-50% of their diet should be an insectivore/carnivore diet. Good sources include crickets, mealworms, hard boiled eggs, pinkies, commercial sugar glider diets, and monkey chow (avoid the ones high in iron and vitamin D). A calcium supplement and a multivitamin supplement should be added to the diet 1-2 times weekly. Chopped up fruits and leafy vegetables, along with preservative free juices can be given as a treat but should compose no more than 10-15% of the diet. Favorites include orange, watermelon, pear, kiwi, apricot, berries, banana, apple, mango, grapes, melon, and figs. The remaining portion of the sugar glider’s diet should be related to nectar and sap-type foods such as Nekton-Lori or Gliderade. These can be supplied in a sipper bottle or bowl anchored to the side of the cage. There are numerous different recipes for mixtures involving Leadbeater’s available. While many of these are good they do not all constitute a fully balanced diet ? rather they supplement it. Care must also be taken as the vitamins added break down with continued storage and freezing. Clean, fresh water should be available at all times. Water is easily provided in water bottles equipped with sipper tubes and should be placed in a position your glider can perch near comfortably. This method also helps keep the water free from contamination. Even though the capacity of the bottles can hold enough to last the glider a few days they should be rinsed out and changed daily.

Pet Rabbit Basics
There is only one species of rabbit, but over 50 different breeds. Rabbits are classified as lagomorphs due to an extra set of upper incisors called “peg” teeth. Both the incisors and molars grow continuously throughout the rabbit’s life. Wild rabbits feed continuously, eating exclusively grasses. This herbivorous diet is unlike that of rodents, which eat primarily grains and tubers. Most of rabbit digestion occurs in the hindgut (cecum), and this high fiber diet maintains normal gastrointestinal motility and fermentation. It is normal for rabbits to eat their “soft” stools during the night. These are called cecotropes, and provide them with important proteins and vitamins. Pet Rabbit Nutrition Recommended daily diet for each 5 lb. body weight: 1. Unlimited Bermuda or Timothy grass hay Alfalfa hay is not recommended for most adult house rabbits as it is too high in calcium content and calories, but can be offered free choice to young or pregnant rabbits 2. Minimum of 1 cup vegetables Select 3 different types dark green or dark yellow vegetables daily: Alfalfa sprouts, carrots and carrot tops, cilantro, collard greens, endive, green peppers, parsley, romaine lettuce, kale, outer cabbage leaves, raspberry leaves, wheat grass, pea pods (not the peas), squash, raddichio, dandelion leaves. 3. High fiber pellets No more than ¼ cup maintenance-type, alfalfa-based (18% or higher fiber) pellet. If using Oxbow Bunny Basics T, a timothy-based (27% fiber) pellet, can give up to ½ cup. Do not feed gourmet pellets that have seeds and cereals! 4. Limited Fruits If not overweight, a small amount of high fiber fruit (up to 3 types) totaling 1-2 level tablespoons can be fed: Apple, peach, plum, pear, melon, raspberry, papaya, blueberry, blackberry, strawberry, pineapple Avoid sugary fruits, such as bananas and grapes 5. No high fat or carbohydrates treats Never feed cereals, bread, oats, corn, seeds, or nuts!!! Common Disease and Problems 1. Gastrointestinal (GI) Disease GI stasis (abnormal motility) is the number one problem in pet rabbits and is the most common cause of decreased appetite and stools in an otherwise healthy rabbit. Primary causes include an improper diet, overgrowth teeth and other stresses. Although hairballs are rare, occasionally a rabbit in stasis may experience a hairball obstruction. Rabbits with stasis will have soft stools or small, hard stools. In some cases, acute death from abnormal fermentation and bacterial overgrowth (enterotoxemia) occurs. Acute, profuse diarrhea is a medical emergency, and is especially common in young rabbits. 2. Dental Problems Tooth problems are also very common and linked to improper diet. Rabbit teeth grow 4-5 inches a year! If overgrown, the teeth may wear abnormally, causing painful points and spurs, leading to tooth root abscesses. Rabbits with dental disease will often drool and stop eating. 3. Obesity Obesity is common in pet rabbits and is due to improper diet (too many pellets or treats) and lack of exercise. Obesity can lead to lameness and sores on the feet, an inability to groom (urine and fecal accumulation) and GI stasis. 4. Respiratory Disease Pasteurella is a bacteria that most rabbits carry and acquire at birth. In some rabbits, it can lead to eye, nose, lung, skin and bone infections. 5. Urinary and Reproductive Disease Kidney disease occurs in older rabbits and may be caused by infections, toxins, cancer, and aging degeneration. Uterine tumors are very common in older, unsprayed females. Urinary infections and stones can occur in both sexes from excess calcium execration from an improper diet. 6. Parasites Coccidia can cause diarrhea in young rabbits less than 6 months of age. Some exhibit blood in the stools. Encephalitozoon is a parasite causing kidney and neurologic disease, especially in older rabbits. 7. Other Rabbits are prone to digging and chewing and may get torn nails, ingest foreign-body material or experience electrocution. Spinal fractures and paralysis may occur from improper handling and falls. Recommended Veterinary Care 1. Yearly Exam Physical examination Dental examination Weight determination Nail trim Review diet and environmental dangers Baseline bloodwork: -Young rabbits less than 1 year of age: Rabbit Infectious Disease Panel -Mature rabbits over 1-2 years of age: Complete Blood Count Chemistry Panel 2. Spay/Neuter at 6-9 months Signs of Illness Decreased or loss of appetite Poor hair coat Decreased or absence of stools or diarrhea Lameness Runny eyes and nose Excessive hiding Abnormal swelling on the jaw Weight loss Useful Websites www.heidihoefer.com House Rabbit Society (www.rabbit.org)

Guinea Pig Basics http://harvestsum.com/ac3/?page_id=519 Wed, 03 Jun 2009 19:03:31 +0000 http://harvestsum.com/ac3/?page_id=519 Back to Avian & Exotic Care Pet Guinea Pig Basics click to download this article
Pet Guinea Pig Basics
Native to the Andes Mountains of South America, Guinea pigs are rodents related to the chinchilla and the porcupine. There are 11 breeds and 23 varieties (colors) of Guinea pigs, which are also known as cavies. The three most common breeds are the Abyssinian (rough, short coat with cowlick) the American or English (classic short hair) and the Peruvian (longhair). Wild Guinea pigs are herbivores, consuming a variety of vegetation. Because they feed continuously, healthy guinea pigs make frequent, formed fecal pellets. Guinea pigs also normally produce and ingest softer stools throughout the day. These are called cecotropes, and provide them with important proteins and vitamins. Guinea pigs are social and tend to do better in bonded pairs or trios. They are fully haired and able to eat solid foods soon after birth. Generally, Guinea pigs live about 4-5 years, but may live 7-8 years with proper care. Caging Guinea pigs are best kept in an open top enclosure at least 1’ wide x 2’ long with walls at least 12” high. A solid floor is recommended with dust-free bedding (pine shaving or recycled news paper), which should be changed weekly. Wire-bottom cages are not recommended because they lead to foot problems. Fresh water should be provided daily in a sipper bottle. Nutrition A high fiber diet is essential for optimal Guinea pig health. Guinea pigs may be often reluctant to try new food items and it may take 1-4 weeks for a new item to be recognized. Always add new food items gradually to avoid gastrointestinal upset. Guinea pigs are unusual among rodents in that they have a high dietary requirement for vitamin C. Fresh timothy hay should be comprise 50% of the diet. Alfalfa hay is not recommended for most adult Guinea pigs as it is too high in calcium content and calories, but can be offered free choice to young or pregnant Guinea pigs. Fresh vegetables should be offered twice daily Emphasize dark leafy vegetables Carrots are an acceptable treat High fiber Guinea pig pellets Do not feed rabbit or other rodent pellets Do not feed gourmet pellets that have seeds or cereals Buy fresh pellets every 30 days as vitamin C content dissipates quickly Vitamin C Supplements Offer one quarter of an orange per day to ensure adequate vitamin C Liquid vitamin C supplements can be added to water as an alternative Vegetables high in vitamin C include: spinach, kale, parsley, chicory, red, yellow and bell peppers Treats If not overweight, a small amount of high fiber fruit can be offered (apple, peach, plum, pear, melon, raspberry, papaya, blueberry, blackberry, blackberry, strawberry, and pineapple); Avoid sugary fruits such as bananas and grapes Do not feed cereals, bread, oats, corn, seeds, and nuts Common Diseases Scurvy (Vitamin C deficiency) Probably the most commonly encountered health problem in Guinea pigs. Young, growing animals are most susceptible and sick Guinea pigs need additional vitamin C. Affected Guinea pigs exhibit a rough hair coat and have trouble eating. They often have painful joints and are predisposed to foot sores. Gastrointestinal and Dental Disease Gastrointestinal problems are often secondary to dental disease or an inappropriate diet. Loss of appetite is a frequent problem. Guinea pigs are very sensitive to changes in the diet; a new brand of pellet may be enough to create inappetence. They can also develop gastrointestinal stasis from food impactions and hairballs. Since they cannot vomit, Guinea pigs with colic will often grind their teeth, may be bloated and pass small, hard stools. Rectal impactions in older Guinea pigs occur from build-up of soft stools and loss of anal tone. Guinea pig teeth grow continually, about 10 cm a year! The vegetation in their native environment is tough and fibrous and results in continual wear of the teeth. A diet low in fiber may lead to the development of overgrown teeth, tooth root abscesses, points, spurs, and abnormal wear. Guinea pigs with dental disease will often drool and stop eating. Hair, Skin and Foot Problems Hair loss can be self-induced or spontaneous. Stressed, bored or dominant individuals may chew their own or cage mate’s fur. A guinea pig may also pull and chew at hair over sites of pain, especially the limbs and abdomen. Other causes of skin problems are frequently mite infestation or ringworm. Guinea pigs that develop swellings should be examined for abscesses or tumors. It is important to brush longhaired species regularly to minimize matting and ingestion of hair. Pressure sores, also called bumblefoot are especially a concern in older Guinea pigs. Obesity, vitamin C deficiency and wire bottom cages are often predisposing factors. Affected individuals are lame, lethargic, and often lose their appetites. Severe bumblefoot can lead to bone, joint and kidney infections. Respiratory Problems Pneumonia is not uncommon and may be severe with an acute onset. Lung tumors are more common in older Guinea pigs. Guinea pigs with respiratory disease exhibit runny eyes and nose, weight loss, and difficulty breathing. Reproductive and Urinary Problems Sexual maturity arrives early in Guinea pigs, with females being able to breed at 4-6 weeks and males at 9-10 weeks of age. Females should be bred prior to 6 months of age to prevent birthing complications. Signs of a pregnant Guinea pig in distress include: lethargy, depression, straining for more than 30 minutes, and bloody or greenish-brown vaginal discharge. Urinary stones develop as a consequence of too much calcium in the diet (excessive alfalfa hay or an overabundance of pellets). A guinea pig with stones may exhibit bloody urine, straining, and a hunched posture. Obesity Obesity is common in Guinea pigs and is due to improper diet (too many pellets or treats) and lack of exercise. Obesity can lead to lameness and sores on feet, inability to groom (urine and fecal accumulation), reproductive problems and GI stasis. Recommended Veterinary Care Yearly Physical Exam: Dental examination Weight determination and nail trim Review diet and environmental dangers.

Ferret Basics http://harvestsum.com/ac3/?page_id=523 Wed, 03 Jun 2009 19:06:06 +0000 http://harvestsum.com/ac3/?page_id=523 Back to Avian & Exotic Care Pet Ferret Basics click to download this article
Pet Ferret Basics
Ferrets are in the mustelid family of carnivores and have been domesticated for over 2000 years. There are over 8 million ferrets in the United States, making them the third most popular pet today. They are cherished for their curious, playful nature and can be quite entertaining. Ferrets have an average lifespan of 5-7 years, but some can live up to 12 years. Ferret Nutrition In the wild, ferrets are predators and require a diet high in protein and fat and low in fiber. For our pets, feed dry kitten chow or food formulated for ferrets. Avoid high sugar treats like raisins or fruit. Common Diseases and Problems 1. Common Concerns Ferrets are prone to chewing and burrowing: always supervise when free in house. Ferrets are excellent escape artists and will kill small bird and rodent pets. In fact, ferrets are used for hunting in Great Britain! Ferret do not tolerate hot weather as they have poorly developed sweat glands Middle age occurs early in the ferret, around 3 years 2. Insulinoma This is the most common ferret disease in pets over 3 years of age. It is caused by a tumor of the pancreas that produces an abnormal amount of insulin. This results in low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and can be seen by increased sleeping, hind limb weakness, a stuporous appearance, excess salivation, and seizures. Diagnosed by physical exam, insulin and blood glucose levels, insulinomas can be managed medically or surgically or a combination of both. 3. Adrenal Gland Disease Almost 90% of pet ferrets will develop adrenal disease, most commonly seen at 3 years of age and older. In most cases, a tumor develops, causing an overproduction of steroid hormones. Ferrets will often experience hair loss, which may be waxing and waning, often starting on the tail. Some ferrets are itchy, especially over the shoulder region. Some ferrets are itchy without hair loss, and some have no hair loss. Male ferrets may experience an enlarged prostate and have difficulty urinating. They may also develop aggression and a strong odor. Females will often experience an enlargement of the vulva. Diagnosis is by physical exam findings, adrenal hormone testing and abdominal ultrasound. Surgical removal of the effected gland(s) is recommended in young, healthy ferrets, although medical management is possible with hormone injections. 4. Lymphoma Lymphoma is common cancer of ferrets and causes swollen lymph nodes in the neck, shoulder and hind legs or an enlarged liver, spleen and thymus. Ferrets as young as 10 months to 2 years of age may be affected. 5. Heart Disease Dilated cardiomyopathy is common in middle-aged and older ferrets. Affected individuals are often weak, experience weight loss and an increased breathing rate. Rarely will a ferret with heart disease cough. Diagnosis is by physical examination, x-rays and ultrasound. Medical management is helpful if the disease is treated early. 6. Gastrointestinal Disease Gastrointestinal (GI) disease is common in ferrets of all ages. Foreign-body obstruction is seen frequently, especially in young ferrets and is a true surgical emergency. Unlike cats and dogs, ferrets with GI obstruction usually don’t vomit. Affected pets will show weight loss, diarrhea, weakness, and teeth grinding. Diagnosis is by physical exam and x-rays. Ferrets seem especially attracted to sponges and pieces of rubber (sneakers). Hairball obstructions are possible, and are seen in older ferrets. Helicobacter is a bacteria that causes inflammation of the stomach. Some ferrets develop painful stomach ulcers. Ferrets often present like a foreign-body and may also have bloody stools. Diagnosis is by stomach biopsy. Coccidia and giardia are protozoal parasites that cause diarrhea in young ferrets. Epizootic Catarrhal Enteritis (ECE) or “green slime disease” is caused by a coronavirus that usually affects older ferrets. Often a new, young, apparently healthy ferret carrying the virus is brought into the household. Because of this, it is important to keep new pets separate for 3-4 weeks. 7. Enlarged Spleen About 90% of pet ferrets have an enlarged spleen. This is more common in older ferrets, and is usually a benign condition involved with the manufacture of red blood cells. Occasionally, cancer of the spleen or excessive mechanical pressure may require surgical removal. Diagnosis is by physical exam, biopsy, x-rays and ultrasound. 8. Dental Disease Broken teeth, dental tartar, and gingivitis are common in ferrets. Any ferret that stops eating, or has a foul odor from the mouth should be examined for dental disease. In some cases, a dental cleaning may be necessary. 9. Aleutian’s Disease Aleutian’s disease is a progressively fatal immune disease caused by an infectious parvovirus. Affected ferrets often exhibit hind limb weakness, weight loss and inflammation in various organs. A blood test is available for ferrets at-risk. Recommended Veterinary Care 1.
